The Challenge

What they needed

The chain operates 200+ franchise locations, and a POS outage at any single store means a stalled line and lost sales — offline resilience wasn't optional, it was the baseline requirement. Each terminal needed to keep taking orders and processing payments with no internet connection, then reconcile cleanly the moment connectivity returned. At the same time, corporate needed one real-time view across all 200+ locations — sales and inventory — not next-morning batch reports. Kitchen staff needed tickets to hit the pass the instant an order was placed, with no lag between counter and line. And the system had to run identically across every franchise location, at scale, while still surfacing store-level performance data managers could act on immediately.

Our Solution

What we built

We built the POS as a cloud-native Electron desktop app wrapping a React front end, giving each terminal a native, always-on interface that keeps working when the internet doesn't — orders queue locally and sync automatically once the connection is back. A Node.js backend handles that sync logic along with payment processing, order routing, and kitchen display integration, backed by PostgreSQL for transactional data across all 200+ locations. WebSocket connections push live updates — new orders, inventory changes, sales figures — from every terminal to the central analytics dashboard and to kitchen displays in real time, so a ticket fired at the counter appears on the line quickly. On top of that, we layered predictive inventory management that flags reorder points using historical sales patterns, rather than a single blanket threshold across the chain.

How we approached it

Built the client in Electron rather than a browser tab so each terminal could queue orders locally during an outage and sync to PostgreSQL the moment connectivity returned.

Used WebSocket connections instead of polling to push kitchen tickets and inventory changes to every terminal and display in real time, not on a refresh cycle.

Centered the Node.js backend on PostgreSQL across all 200+ locations, so corporate analytics query one consistent dataset instead of reconciling per-store exports.

Kept the React front end identical across every franchise location, so onboarding a new store means configuration, not a custom build or a separate codebase to maintain.
